Yesterday I was blessed to spend the day with Devin on the set of the television show Random Acts. (More on that to come.)
Often we hear that successful social media influencers and popular YouTubers are all about self.
Selfish. Self-centered. Self-absorbed.
They earn livings by simply turning on a camera or iPhone and being irreverent, outrageous, and often worse.
Indeed I’ve heard and read that becoming a brand online has nothing to do with talent. It’s being in the right place at the right time with the right friends.
Sure, I’ve seen that.
But let me share what I saw yesterday.
I watched Devin work tirelessly hour after hour after hour behind the camera.
I watched Devin direct friends and strangers with boldness, kindness, humor.
I watched Devin treat everyone with respect and with humble eyes.
I watched as Devin generously Facetimed with my sons back home in Virginia and made their day, week, month and more.
I watched Devin repeatedly refuse to settle for good or better when best was still possible.
During one complicated shot as the sun bullied the thermometer up to 100 degrees, I watched Devin gather his team together for a pep talk.
The message?
“That last take was great. But I think we can do better.”
And, naturally, they did.
It was a masterclass in professionalism and drive from someone with a rare work ethic and commitment to his hard-earned style
What a refreshing experience to see one of the Internet’s brightest stars grinding away in the trenches of creativity.
What a pleasure to work with someone who doesn’t take his fame for granted and who’s earned every friend and fan through honest work and authenticity.
